Vegan Visibility Is A Success At Climate March

Print pagePDF pageEmail page

009As forecast, the weather was beautiful and vegans were visibly plentiful at the Seattle People’s March for Climate Change. One of a reported sixteen hundred-plus marches held around the world on September 21, the Seattle event attracted a broad base of people and organizations. Everyone demanded action from our governments to move off of a diet of fossil fuels and onto a clean energy economy that provides green, living-wage jobs. As Green Vegans posted earlier, that message is essential but the majority of concerns and solutions were excluded by Climate March organizers in Seattle and elsewhere. Vegans made sure that everyone in the Seattle march saw that veganism is the most effective response to climate change.

073As many of us passed out hundreds of pieces of literature to march-goers and passersby, others took turns holding four large banners and dozens of signs, many featuring posters of the documentary, Cowspiracy. This was truly a collaborative action by the vegan community. We took turns holding up banners and it didn’t matter which organization created it.

Twelve speakers presented their perspectives for about an hour and a half. From our position behind the stage and on the sidewalk, vegans stretched for at least fifty feet wrapping around the rear and sides of the stage. Our large vegan banners and signs were visible to the all of the rally attendees as well as the public on the street. At two-thirty, we merged as the vegan contingent into the main marching column that numbered some two thousand people, according to the media. We marched for a mile or so as traffic stopped and we delivered our message to the marchers on waterfront.

It was a great day as Seattle’s vegan community introduced people to veganism. We are happy to report also that additional vegans were demonstrating at the circus in Everett. Congratulations to all!

Green Vegans will be represented in New York and Seattle at the People’s Climate March. Our participation in two Seattle organizing meetings was welcomed. We were given time to speak, propose, and vote. It mattered little in the end because the strategy of the majority of organizations represented there reflected the lead organization, 350.org. It remains oriented to recruiting social-political justice advocates to forge a broader climate change movement that includes minorities, indigenous cultures, and labor. This will demonstrate the global character of the movement that demands change from the institutions of government and corporations, and through international agreements.

For the Seattle march, there is a focus on ending dependence on fossil fuels, creating green jobs with living wages, and taking the political / corporate institutions to task for their failures to protect both people and the environment. Broadening the diversity of the climate change movement, demanding a clean energy economy that creates jobs with livable wages, and telling the government and corporate powers to work on behalf of the people and climate are essential. However, there is not “one solution” to climate change as the organizing majority states. There are many solutions, each based on the transformations we must make in the way we live. Green Vegans was the sole vote at the Seattle organizing meeting in favor of including in the official event statement that people have the power to effect change through personal responsibility—the proven effectiveness of veganism and lowering human populations, for instance. We were told that the strategy of personal responsibility to effect change was a failed approach of past environmental campaigns.  Continue reading

Final Seattle Climate Rally Update Posted Thursday

Print pagePDF pageEmail page

Because we are finalizing plans and still getting new information, we are revising our final update for the Seattle and other Climate Rallies happening this Sunday, September 21. We will post that update on Thursday.

If you are coming as a “visible vegan” and will join the vegan contingent, please email contact@greenvegans.org  so we can get a rough idea of how many have committed to the Seattle rally. We will have signs both pre-made and blank. We encourage you to bring your own and identify with the organization of your choice. This is a collaborative event to influence environmentalists and climate change advocates about veganism. We have a great opportunity to be visible and advocate as we distribute literature. Green Vegans will have a few organic cotton logo-tees available for marchers at $20 or on a sliding scale that you decide. Thank you for your support100_1801.

UPDATED INFORMATION FOR VEGANS AND OTHERS GOING TO THE SEATTLE CLIMATE CHANGE RALLY

Vegans, other environmentalists, organizations for justice and labor, and people from all walks of life are going to the Seattle Rally to Challenge Climate Change on Sunday, September 21. This rally is linked to a global day of similar events. It is a rare opportunity for the vegan community to have high profile media coverage for our message. The rally begins at 1:00 at the Westlake Mall Park in downtown Seattle. 20140907_184932 VEGANS are asked to show up at 12:15 to pre-event organize and meet and greet a few feet east of the Starbucks Coffee store across the street from the rally. Please bring your own poster board signs but leave one side plain if you want to tape on a Cowspiracy movie poster:

• Twenty Cowspiracy movie posters will be available to mount on your signs—a great visual and conversation opener.
• We will have at least two types of vegan literature specific to climate change for you to pass out or bring your own.
• At 12:15 to 1:00 we will meet at the vegan staging area, say hello to one-another and then ask for a vegan consensus about how we can be most visible as vegans at the rally. The “Cowspiracy” posters will be taped to signs here. There was a march planned for the event but we will get the final word on that after we attend an organizers meeting this Thursday evening.
• All organizations are encouraged to rally under your own identity and bring tables for literature.
• Green Vegans is asking for six people to carry two banners (made by Greener Printer). Please email contact@greenvegans.org for that or passing out vegan climate change literature. If we have your size, banner carriers will get a free organic cotton Green Vegan logo tee-shirt.
• We are looking for any original turtle costumes from the 1999 World Trade Organization (WTO) march and

ALERT: NW Wolves Face Imminent Death

Print pagePDF pageEmail page

iStock_000008330410XSmallUrgent Alert for NW wolves facing lethal response by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Call and email Governor Jay Inslee, Washington State first thing Monday morning, August 25th, or as soon as you can: (360) 902-4111 / governor@gov.wa.gov. Then call and email the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Director Phil Anderson at 360- 902-2200 / director@dfw.wa.gov.  Ask both of them why they are ignoring ecosystem health by allowing sheep to graze by permit on public lands—also known as ecosystems.

This is what WDFW told the public: http://wdfw.wa.gov/news/aug2014a/.

What followed was this: http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/news/press_releases/2014/wolf-08-23-2014.html . Remember, only veganism prevents this.

Green Vegans Whale Campaign Update

s_v10ag496skx0194_bPeninsula Daily News: “NEAH BAY –– Fifteen years after returning from their tribe’s last legal whale kill, some members of the crew of Makah whale hunters who led that hunt set out again into the bay aboard the Hummingbird whaling canoe Saturday.

…the last whale killed by Makah tribal members was in 2007, when a group of five illegally shot dead a gray whale….

…But the rogue 2007 hunt created divisions, Keith Johnson said, pointing out there was no event to mark the 10-year anniversary of the 1999 hunt….

‘Do you see the whole tribe here?’ he asked as he pointed to the three dozen people on the beach before Saturday’s commemorative paddle.

….Conservationists say they are pleased that it’s been 15 years since the last legal hunt.

‘We feel differently about the 15th anniversary,’ said Margaret Owen, who formed Peninsula Citizens for the Protection of Whales with her husband, Chuck, to speak against the tribe’s whale hunts.

‘There’s 60 whales that could have been killed in that time,’ Owens said.”

100_1801 Green Vegans board members have campaigned against this whale hunt from the start—ten years prior to founding Green Vegans. Two years ago we sent a three-person delegation (the only nonprofit organization self-identified as vegan) to the International Whaling Commission meeting (IWC64) in Panama where aboriginal quotas were up for vote.

Despite scientific evidence that two endangered sub-populations that are genetically / behaviorally distinct, the U.S. delegation did a lot of pre-meeting lobbying that ensured a no debate loss for gray whales. The U.S. National Marine Fisheries Agency is producing a new Environmental Impact Statement that may be out by Fall 2014. They have a monumental task. Research has revealed that in addition to the small population of 200 “resident” gray whales, the highly endangered Western Pacific gray whales also migrate through the same area where the Makah want to kill up to five individuals every year.

Though we are volunteers, reading these documents and staying up-to-date is an ongoing project throughout the years though we don’t post about it. We are reading this year’s scientific publications being considered by the IWC Scientific Committee which is meeting now. No decision has been made as to whether Green Vegans will attend this year’s main meeting being held 15-18 September, but it depends upon the newest science available.

Please donate to Green Vegans using our handy PayPal button found on every page. Eight days from today, May 26, marks the fifth anniversary of Green Vegans’ founding. YOU made that possible! Seattle Dolphin Rally (and Putin’s Postcard)

Print pagePDF pageEmail page

20140214_131836The Sea Shepherd-organized rally was well-attended today, February 14, and included many who had been to the tragic “Cove” in Taiji. This season, they reported, some 800 dolphins were killed and others captured. See Sea Shepherd (www.seashepherd.org) for reports from many cities. 20140214_131244

Immediately after the rally, Green Vegans visited the Russian consulate in Seattle to present them with a “Postcard for (Russian President) Putin”. On it we wrote, “President Putin, Tear Down These Tanks”. The consulate was closed, but found we could slip our poster-sized card under the consulate door.20140214_132228 Images of Russian orca prisons and Putin reaching out to a dolphin will greet consulate workers when they return.

Russian-caught Orcas Additional Background

This is additional background from a non-anticaptivity blogger. We’ve not yet had a chance to fact-check all of the story, but on this Valentine’s Day of protest against the Taiji dolphin slaughters and captures let’s not forget the rest of the brutal captivity industry. Here are the tanks in Moscow believed to be housing the orca whales taken from the wild in 2013 (and now or eventually Taiji-caught dolphins, Beluga whales, and…).

News: Sochi Olympics and Violence

Print pagePDF pageEmail page

As the February 14 demonstrations protesting the Taiji dolphin slaughters and captures draws near, do NOT forget the Russian captures of beluga, pilot, and orca whales. Stories about orca whales and Taiji dolphins taking part in the Sochi Olympic games have faded in the media. The exception is this excellent investigation http://timzimmermann.com/2014/02/10/who-is-white-sphere-the-barely-disguised-conglomerate-behind-russias-wild-orca-captures/ by a journalist who took the time to uncover the truth.

We ask you not to view the Olympic Games on TV (NBC in the US) in protest of these travesties and many others. Russian President Putin and his government are responsible for violence against these whales and dolphins, homeless dogs in Sochi, and LGBT people.

As for the Olympic Committee, we reject the notion that the highest standards of personal behavior and competition are required of athletes by the Olympic Committee while the same committee AND SPONSORS do not require hosting countries to uphold justice for individuals from other species and people. The Olympic Committee must reform the host country selection criteria or face dwindling public and commercial support for the games.
