Makah DEIS Talking Points

Print pagePDF pageEmail page

Green Vegans board members have been at the core of this issue since 1995. We’ve been here before, and have helped stop the whale hunt in the past. With your advocacy and support of Green Vegans, we can do it again. Before going further, save and use this link to the National Marine Fisheries (NMFS) website to access instructions, documents including the DEIS, and information about the meetings in Seattle and Port Angeles, WA. iStock_000010548185XSmall

We’ve organized the following talking points for your use. Pick and choose, present in your own words at the public meeting regarding the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) on the Makah tribe’s effort to kill gray whales off the Washington coast. We have included links to suggested comments from other organizations at the end.

To Start: Please read the Executive Summary in the DEIS (link above) that contains the six options being considered. One of your comments will advocate for Option1—No Action. The Makah would be denied the legal cover to kill gray whales.

Note: The closing date for written comments is June 11, 2015. We and other organizations have requested that date be extended for several reasons we won’t go into here. Remember, you likely will have only 3 +/– minutes to speak at the meeting. You can give the NMFS written comments at this meeting but we urge you take advantage of the time between now and June 11 as we continue reviewing the 1,200-plus page DEIS and additional documents. We will post comments on this website that are far more thorough and specific for you to use at least two weeks before the June 11 closing date. Those comments will have a greater impact.  Continue reading

Green Vegans Whale Campaign Update

s_v10ag496skx0194_bPeninsula Daily News: “NEAH BAY –– Fifteen years after returning from their tribe’s last legal whale kill, some members of the crew of Makah whale hunters who led that hunt set out again into the bay aboard the Hummingbird whaling canoe Saturday.

…the last whale killed by Makah tribal members was in 2007, when a group of five illegally shot dead a gray whale….

…But the rogue 2007 hunt created divisions, Keith Johnson said, pointing out there was no event to mark the 10-year anniversary of the 1999 hunt….

‘Do you see the whole tribe here?’ he asked as he pointed to the three dozen people on the beach before Saturday’s commemorative paddle.

….Conservationists say they are pleased that it’s been 15 years since the last legal hunt.

‘We feel differently about the 15th anniversary,’ said Margaret Owen, who formed Peninsula Citizens for the Protection of Whales with her husband, Chuck, to speak against the tribe’s whale hunts.

‘There’s 60 whales that could have been killed in that time,’ Owens said.”

100_1801 Green Vegans board members have campaigned against this whale hunt from the start—ten years prior to founding Green Vegans. Two years ago we sent a three-person delegation (the only nonprofit organization self-identified as vegan) to the International Whaling Commission meeting (IWC64) in Panama where aboriginal quotas were up for vote.

Despite scientific evidence that two endangered sub-populations that are genetically / behaviorally distinct, the U.S. delegation did a lot of pre-meeting lobbying that ensured a no debate loss for gray whales. The U.S. National Marine Fisheries Agency is producing a new Environmental Impact Statement that may be out by Fall 2014. They have a monumental task. Research has revealed that in addition to the small population of 200 “resident” gray whales, the highly endangered Western Pacific gray whales also migrate through the same area where the Makah want to kill up to five individuals every year.

Though we are volunteers, reading these documents and staying up-to-date is an ongoing project throughout the years though we don’t post about it. We are reading this year’s scientific publications being considered by the IWC Scientific Committee which is meeting now. No decision has been made as to whether Green Vegans will attend this year’s main meeting being held 15-18 September, but it depends upon the newest science available.

Please donate to Green Vegans using our handy PayPal button found on every page. Eight days from today, May 26, marks the fifth anniversary of Green Vegans’ founding. YOU made that possible! Seattle Dolphin Rally (and Putin’s Postcard)

Print pagePDF pageEmail page

20140214_131836The Sea Shepherd-organized rally was well-attended today, February 14, and included many who had been to the tragic “Cove” in Taiji. This season, they reported, some 800 dolphins were killed and others captured. See Sea Shepherd (www.seashepherd.org) for reports from many cities. 20140214_131244

Immediately after the rally, Green Vegans visited the Russian consulate in Seattle to present them with a “Postcard for (Russian President) Putin”. On it we wrote, “President Putin, Tear Down These Tanks”. The consulate was closed, but found we could slip our poster-sized card under the consulate door.20140214_132228 Images of Russian orca prisons and Putin reaching out to a dolphin will greet consulate workers when they return.

Russian-caught Orcas Additional Background

Print pagePDF pageEmail page

This is additional background from a non-anticaptivity blogger. We’ve not yet had a chance to fact-check all of the story, but on this Valentine’s Day of protest against the Taiji dolphin slaughters and captures let’s not forget the rest of the brutal captivity industry. Here are the tanks in Moscow believed to be housing the orca whales taken from the wild in 2013 (and now or eventually Taiji-caught dolphins, Beluga whales, and…).

News: Sochi Olympics and Violence

Print pagePDF pageEmail page

As the February 14 demonstrations protesting the Taiji dolphin slaughters and captures draws near, do NOT forget the Russian captures of beluga, pilot, and orca whales. Stories about orca whales and Taiji dolphins taking part in the Sochi Olympic games have faded in the media. The exception is this excellent investigation http://timzimmermann.com/2014/02/10/who-is-white-sphere-the-barely-disguised-conglomerate-behind-russias-wild-orca-captures/ by a journalist who took the time to uncover the truth.

We ask you not to view the Olympic Games on TV (NBC in the US) in protest of these travesties and many others. Russian President Putin and his government are responsible for violence against these whales and dolphins, homeless dogs in Sochi, and LGBT people.

As for the Olympic Committee, we reject the notion that the highest standards of personal behavior and competition are required of athletes by the Olympic Committee while the same committee AND SPONSORS do not require hosting countries to uphold justice for individuals from other species and people. The Olympic Committee must reform the host country selection criteria or face dwindling public and commercial support for the games.

A Lack of Moral Clarity at Sochi Olympics

Print pagePDF pageEmail page

safe_image To host the Sochi Olympics, Russian President Putin’s abuses his power and supports the killing and imprisonment of many species. He and his government are persecuting sexual minorities, capturing orca and beluga whales from the wild, and importing dolphins captured in the larger slaughter at Taiji, Japan—some of who are in Russian captivity along with wild-caught juvenile beluga whales. Putin and his government also endorse the slaughter of stray dogs in Sochi, and now, the arrest of three “animal rights” activists who oppose his actions (see the petition on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/GreenVegans?ref=hl). This demands our response. Green Vegans implore you to boycott the games and the media (especially NBC and its sponsors) that broadcast them. It’s time to stop pretending that the Olympics should ever be used as an excuse to kill and imprison others. These Olympics have come to represent injustice and murder.

This is also an opportunity to demonstrate to importance of seeing the connections between these travesties. They are all connected by the same worldviews that approve of each persecution. This is representative of our human ecology and how the Seven Results we advocate are required as a whole, again because they are interconnected. So, please revisit the Seven Results page on this, our Green Vegans website.

Green Vegans cancelled its earlier plans to hold a demonstration at the Japanese and Russian consulates in Seattle to protest all of these issues after learning that Sea Shepherd had plans to sponsor an international day of protest a few weeks later. Though apparently limited to the Taiji dolphin slaughter and captures for the marine park entertainment industry, all people and organizations have been invited to participate. We urge all Green Vegans to attend. http://www.seashepherd.org/news-and-media/2014/02/03/join-sea-shepherd-conservation-society-and-sea-shepherd-cove-guardians-at-world-love-for-dolphins-da-1551

20140205_112955 Here is the “tank” we had planned to use for our original Seattle area protest.

Because the Russian orca and beluga whale captures still need the public’s attention, monitor the Green Vegans Facebook page for our upcoming response at the Russian consulate.

Taiji Dolphin Slaughter Update – two additional actions

Print pagePDF pageEmail page

Sea Shepherd Cove Guardians and CNN, are reporting that the Taiji slaughter of dolphins is finished for this particular capture. Though the figures of dolphins killed and those sold into slavery to aquariums for “entertainment” differ between the two reports, Sea Shepherd’s numbers were specific while CNN’s vague and quoted from Tokyo sources.

Lolita Killer Whale

Additional Actions to take: After reading the Sea Shepherd accounting (below), and the evidence presented by Rick O’Barry of the Dolphin Project that these kills are not 400 year-old traditions please take these two additional actions. It is still important to let the Japanese government know you are not forgetting this barbaric travesty. So, in addition to yesterdays Action steps, please email your protest directly to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government: https://www.kantei.go.jp/foreign/forms/comment_ssl.html You will see a form to fill in. Then, send a note to Gerald Dick the CEO of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. He could end future captures and killings enforcing WAZA’s code of ethics: Dr. Gerald Dick / gerald.dick@waza.org

Reports / Documentation from Taiji 2014

Sea Shepherd Cove Guardians describes the scene on 21 January 2014:

“For the fifth straight day the killers of Taiji, Japan inflicted further pain and suffering on 42 of the 250 Bottlenose dolphins that were herded into the cove. After the killers arrived at daybreak they pushed the first Bottlenose dolphin pod to the killing shore with the same inhumane muscle and force typical in Taiji. Unfortunately, however, the pod that fought so hard in the previous days was unable fight from lack of food, exhaustion, and injuries sustained from killers and motors over the last five days. …

… A total of 93 Bottlenose dolphins were taken from the ocean in the past 5 days by the barbaric killers and trainers of Taiji, Japan. The killers claim the barbaric drive, starvation, beating, and murdering of dolphins is their culture. However, they continue to try and hide their actions and make millions of dollars off of the captive industry that is used for funding the slaughter. Total: 52 captives / 41 deaths / 130-140 driven back out to sea.” https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.279034838913420.1073741883.109164785900427&type=1

From the Dolphin Project, correcting history

Unfortunately, media continue to not challenge the Japan government’s propaganda that this is an ancient cultural tradition. From Dolphin Project’s Rick O’Berry we’ve excerpted part of their 20 January media release: “Taiji Dolphin Hunt Not a Tradition”.

Claims being made by the Japanese government to the media and the public that the Taiji dolphin drive hunts, … are part of Japan’s “traditional culture” are completely false.  …

One of Japan’s foremost defenders of the dolphins, our colleague Sakae Hemmi of the Elsa Nature Conservancy of Japan, submitted a letter a few weeks ago to Dr. Gerald Dick, Executive Director of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), which includes as a member the Japan Association of Zoos and Aquariums (JAZA), one of whose members is the Taiji Whale Museum, which brokers dolphins from the dolphin hunts around the world.

Dr. Dick responded to Elsa stating that WAZA would not take action against the hunts:  “As you know, in some Japanese communities these drives have been part of the culture for centuries.”  This same false claim is now being made to the media by the Japanese government.

“This claim of ‘Japanese tradition’ is nonsense,” stated Ric O’Barry, Director of Earth Island’s Dolphin Project. “The dolphin drive hunts, according to the town’s own written history, says a couple of drive hunts occurred in 1936 and 1944, but the current series of hunts only began in 1969.”

Ms. Hemmi has replied… “In fact, the history of dolphin hunting in Taiji is short. According to The History of Taiji, edited and published by Taiji town in 1979, the first recorded dolphin drive was in 1933, with subsequent hunts occurring in 1936 and 1944. It was not until 1969 that dolphin drives have been conducted on a large scale. The history of the dolphin drives spans not so-called 400 years, but a mere 45. Furthermore, in 1969, the main goal of the dolphin drive was to capture pilot whales as prized showpieces for the Taiji Whale Museum. In other words, the dolphin drive was purely for profit, having nothing to do with cultural history.” See more at http://savejapandolphins.org/blog/post/taiji-dolphin-drive-hunt-is-not-a-tradition

Green Vegans thanks the many people and their organizations who had to bear witness to this butchery so that the world would have eyes.

Taiji Dolphin Slaughter Action Alert

Print pagePDF pageEmail page

The Japanese “Cove” killing grounds remain active at Taiji, Japan. Currently, over 250 dolphins have been scared into a series of small netted cages. They’ve not eaten for over three days. As of this writing, the Taiji fishers are selecting dolphins for imprisonment in aquaria entertainment businesses around the world. The butchering of the remaining dolphins, entire pods and calves, seems certain to begin soon, perhaps tomorrow, 21 January, 2014. Here is today’s coverage by CNN. Difficult to watch but motivating our responses. http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/20/world/asia/japan-dolphin-hunt//   and in print http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/nature/this-slaughter-is-lawful-says-japan-more-than-200-dolphins-trapped-in-a-remote-bay-are-expected-to-be-killed-by-hunters-9073079.html

Though Japanese consulates are closed today in the U.S. for Martin Luther King Day (Freedom, ironically),  the Seattle office is oddly closed on Tuesday, 21 January as well though there are no Japanese holidays then. Perhaps there’s a Taiji connection, perhaps not. The San Francisco consulate phone recording makes no mention of being closed on Tuesday, 21 January. So be certain to call the Japanese Washington, DC embassy, and consulates everywhere first thing Tuesday, 21 January. Those of you living outside of the U.S. can also make repeated calls to the embassy of Japan in your country. Be certain to also call Japanese consulates located in smaller cities. Keep trying until you get a live person. You can find contact information for Japanese embassies and consulates around the world here: http://www.us.emb-japan.go.jp/jicc/consulate-guide.html

The Seattle consulate phone number is 206.682.9107. They are closed daily from 11:30 to 1:00. We are attempting a Seattle rally response on short notice so bear with us. Given the holiday and timing of the slaughter, this makes your phone calls very important.

Next, email the U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy, to thank her for her outspoken Tweet that criticized the Taiji killings. “Caroline Kennedy, the recently installed U.S. ambassador to Japan, tweeted that she is ‘deeply concerned by in humaneness of drive hunt dolphin killing.’” (CNN, 1/20/2014) Go to http://japan2.usembassy.gov/e/info/tinfo-email.html

This is the petition we are seeing most at present but there may be more. http://links.causes.com/s/clOHdD

We will post updates on the Green Vegans website, www.greenvegans.org and on our Facebook page.

Please don’t wait. Respond now. Share this information using social media to create more opposition and outrage against the Taiji dolphin slaughter. Thank you.
