Global Warming

Global Warming is a symptom, the result of humanity’s behaviors and decisions. Animal agriculture releases—depending on the study—18 to 51% of the greenhouse gasses (GHGs) that cause global warming. Why, then is it not important to environmentalists to oppose animal agriculture? It also destroys ecosystems, causes disease outbreaks, wounds, death, dehydration, toxic pollution, oceanic dead zones and fear and stress in wildlife. When will the futility of a cow wanting her calf returned, pigs slaughtered by the millions, and the pain of wolves seeing their pack mates killed by aerial gunners be equal crimes in the minds and hearts of environmentalists? Veganism has the opportunity to lead environmentalism, not follow it.

 Carbon Dioxide

Green Vegans invites you to consider how we can heal the Earth. Veganism, along with other personal responsibilities, is the quickest path to reducing GHGs. It can be done virtually overnight. Subscribe to our website (www.greenvegans.org) to learn more about our clear approach to solving environmental problems and the need to achieve social and economic justice for people and a reduced human population through natural attrition. We are on Facebook as well.

For an in-depth examination of our advocacy, read This Is Hope: Green Vegans and the New Human Ecology. Order it through the Green Vegans website to create an automatic donation to Green Vegans. Related blogs are posted on www.thisishopethebook.com. In addition, be certain to see or purchase the documentary, Cowspiracy.  since it thoroughly addresses the environmental impacts of a non-vegan diet.

There are an estimated 21.7 billion to 50 billion “head” of livestock chewing on Earth. Animal agriculture accounts for 70 percent of global agricultural land used. Livestock graze 22 to 26 percent of Earth’s ice-free surface. When environmentalists (or anyone else) do not campaign for the end of animal agriculture they are ensuring corn and soy beans grown for livestock will cover the land instead of recovering ecosystems. This should be THE campaign of the environmental community.

Consider these points about animal agriculture because they are tied to global warming:

A Green Vegans View of the People’s Climate March

Ben White, head turtle, WTO March in Seattle, 1999.

Green Vegans will be represented in New York and Seattle at the People’s Climate March. Our participation in two Seattle organizing meetings was welcomed. We were given time to speak, propose, and vote. It mattered little in the end because the strategy of the majority of organizations represented there reflected the lead organization, 350.org. It remains oriented to recruiting social-political justice advocates to forge a broader climate change movement that includes minorities, indigenous cultures, and labor. This will demonstrate the global character of the movement that demands change from the institutions of government and corporations, and through international agreements.

For the Seattle march, there is a focus on ending dependence on fossil fuels, creating green jobs with living wages, and taking the political / corporate institutions to task for their failures to protect both people and the environment. Broadening the diversity of the climate change movement, demanding a clean energy economy that creates jobs with livable wages, and telling the government and corporate powers to work on behalf of the people and climate are essential. However, there is not “one solution” to climate change as the organizing majority states. There are many solutions, each based on the transformations we must make in the way we live. Green Vegans was the sole vote at the Seattle organizing meeting in favor of including in the official event statement that people have the power to effect change through personal responsibility—the proven effectiveness of veganism and lowering human populations, for instance. We were told that the strategy of personal responsibility to effect change was a failed approach of past environmental campaigns.  Continue reading

Judging from the increase in email traffic we’re getting about the People’s Climate March, vegans will be visible in Seattle, the San Francisco Bay area, New York City and many other places. Cowspiracy Producers Kip and Keegan will be in New York City with the vegan contingent (http://cowspiracy.com/). In Seattle on this Saturday night, there is a showing of Cowspiracy: https://www.facebook.com/events/736228076414969/

Seattle Vegans and Vegan Supporters

Green Vegans believes our purpose in Seattle on September 21 is to get climate advocates and environmentalists to acknowledge the power of veganism to address climate change. We will do this with banners, signs, educational literature, and conversation. Yes, there’s more to veganism and this is a chance to explain that, too.  Green Vegans is helping to facilitate the vegan presence, but everyone is free to do this as individuals and organizations best suited to your preferences. Here are the essential points:  Continue reading

Final Seattle Climate Rally Update Posted Thursday

Print pagePDF pageEmail page

Because we are finalizing plans and still getting new information, we are revising our final update for the Seattle and other Climate Rallies happening this Sunday, September 21. We will post that update on Thursday.

If you are coming as a “visible vegan” and will join the vegan contingent, please email contact@greenvegans.org  so we can get a rough idea of how many have committed to the Seattle rally. We will have signs both pre-made and blank. We encourage you to bring your own and identify with the organization of your choice. This is a collaborative event to influence environmentalists and climate change advocates about veganism. We have a great opportunity to be visible and advocate as we distribute literature. Green Vegans will have a few organic cotton logo-tees available for marchers at $20 or on a sliding scale that you decide. Thank you for your support100_1801.

UPDATED INFORMATION FOR VEGANS AND OTHERS GOING TO THE SEATTLE CLIMATE CHANGE RALLY

Vegans, other environmentalists, organizations for justice and labor, and people from all walks of life are going to the Seattle Rally to Challenge Climate Change on Sunday, September 21. This rally is linked to a global day of similar events. It is a rare opportunity for the vegan community to have high profile media coverage for our message. The rally begins at 1:00 at the Westlake Mall Park in downtown Seattle. 20140907_184932 VEGANS are asked to show up at 12:15 to pre-event organize and meet and greet a few feet east of the Starbucks Coffee store across the street from the rally. Please bring your own poster board signs but leave one side plain if you want to tape on a Cowspiracy movie poster:

• Twenty Cowspiracy movie posters will be available to mount on your signs—a great visual and conversation opener.
• We will have at least two types of vegan literature specific to climate change for you to pass out or bring your own.
• At 12:15 to 1:00 we will meet at the vegan staging area, say hello to one-another and then ask for a vegan consensus about how we can be most visible as vegans at the rally. The “Cowspiracy” posters will be taped to signs here. There was a march planned for the event but we will get the final word on that after we attend an organizers meeting this Thursday evening.
• All organizations are encouraged to rally under your own identity and bring tables for literature.
• Green Vegans is asking for six people to carry two banners (made by Greener Printer). Please email contact@greenvegans.org for that or passing out vegan climate change literature. If we have your size, banner carriers will get a free organic cotton Green Vegan logo tee-shirt.
• We are looking for any original turtle costumes from the 1999 World Trade Organization (WTO) march and

Vegans! Join the World’s Largest Climate Change Rally Today!

UPDATE: A large (hopefully) vegan contingent will be at the Bay Area climate rally in Oakland. Here’s their event page:https://www.facebook.com/events/521264274684672/

Vegans everywhere are preparing for these events. We are making sure that climate change activists include the vegan imperative. We and ecosystems will not win on climate change without veganism. On September 21, people in villages, towns, and cities around the world will come together in a call for action. In New York alone over 750 organizations and tens of thousands of people are gathering for a rally and march there as the United Nations convenes to address climate change policy. On the same day vegans in Seattle and everywhere will join them.earthspace

From http://peoplesclimate.org/march/: World leaders are coming to New York City for a UN summit on the climate crisis. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is urging governments to support an ambitious global agreement to dramatically reduce global warming pollution.

With our future on the line and the whole world watching, we’ll take a stand to bend the course of history. We’ll take to the streets to demand the world we know is within our reach: a world with an economy that works for people and the planet; a world safe from the ravages of climate change; a world with good jobs, clean air and water, and healthy communities.

The Seattle rally will be at Westlake Plaza, downtown, Sunday, September 21, starting at 1:00 (changed time from 12:00). There will be a march to a nearby location that is TBD. All organizations, vegan and nonvegan, are encouraged to represent their own contingent with banners while individuals can bring their own signs. If you are not in Seattle, contact your local vegan organization and check for activities in your area here: http://peoplesclimate.org/march/

If you are happy to carry the two Green Vegans Banners (need 3 – 4 each), please email contact@greenvegans.org. Also, stay tuned for an update about where all vegans and their friends are invited to meet in a specific place very near the rally site. We will finish signs if needed and talk about how we can make the best visual impact and the literature you can pass out at the rally. Please bring your own signs as we may run out at this large event. We and other vegans/organizations will have free literature about the vegan imperative. Green Vegans, to reduce paper consumption, will hand out basic information on a smaller piece of paper that will include links to websites for further information.

There will be tables with information and speakers who will focus the event. This is a great opportunity for everyone including those who want to make it clear that dietary choices must be part of the solution and included in the environmentalist response to climate change.

Said Will Anderson of Green Vegans, “Though there are many new lifestyle changes required for slowing climate change, the science is clear, none is more effective than going vegan.”

Donations are always appreciated to cover our costs and fund campaigns.

ALERT: NW Wolves Face Imminent Death

Print pagePDF pageEmail page

iStock_000008330410XSmallUrgent Alert for NW wolves facing lethal response by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Call and email Governor Jay Inslee, Washington State first thing Monday morning, August 25th, or as soon as you can: (360) 902-4111 / governor@gov.wa.gov. Then call and email the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Director Phil Anderson at 360- 902-2200 / director@dfw.wa.gov.  Ask both of them why they are ignoring ecosystem health by allowing sheep to graze by permit on public lands—also known as ecosystems.

This is what WDFW told the public: http://wdfw.wa.gov/news/aug2014a/.

What followed was this: http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/news/press_releases/2014/wolf-08-23-2014.html . Remember, only veganism prevents this.
